A tradition of wit and whimsy, cunning and all-encompassing trivia, Thoth’s Tournament of Knowledge dates back many centuries to the time when Thoth traveled the world. Recognized as a god in both ancient Egypt and Greece, Thoth was actually a wizard born Thothuro Khenti. Thothuro dedicated his life to wandering the world, acquiring knowledge and teaching others. He attained his godhood, however, not through his vast learning, but as the result of a prank. Wishing to see the great center of learning, Thothuro, quite the Animagus, entered Alexandria one day wearing the head of an ibis. The rest, as they say, is history: the Egyptians adopted the trickster wizard as a god of knowledge, the Greeks appropriated him, and Thoth’s Tournament of Knowledge – a paean to Thothuro’s great trove of erudition – was born.
The Tournament, the greatest test of knowledge in the ancient world, is a traditional part of the Pan-Magical Games, though the topic changes each generation. For Terminus, the Tournament will focus on the Harry Potter phenomenon, as well as elements of fantasy and mythology. We know you know the story, but how well do you know the surrounding community? The culture, the dates, the actors? The fan works? The Tournament, featuring questions from the date of the first book’s first publication to the play in which Shakespeare referenced “The Weird Sisters”, will test the depth and breadth of your knowledge – and will be such a challenge to your mind that Thoth himself would be devilishly proud.
Thoth’s Tournament of Knowledge will feature a team-style tournament structure, and will be played periodically throughout the weekend. Six players will comprise each team, though only four players will participate at a time. Teams will go head-to-head with other players until Thoth has crowned his winners.
Each player will receive a team shirt with his or her team’s custom artwork on the front. In order to cover the cost of the shirts, players in Thoth’s Tournament of Knowledge must pay a $15 participation fee, though players who participate in both Thoth’s Tournament of Knowledge and the Trade Winds Tournament will receive a $5.00 registration discount. Players must pre-register for the tournament; attendees may not register at the conference.
We are proud to announce the teams that have already joined us. Teams may also be sponsored for $150 each. Sponsors – businesses, organizations, or even teams of players – will be able to work with our design team to create a custom mascot for the team.
